Content and Conduct of the SIM Theory & Practical Tests
The scope of the traffic theory test and how the practical vehicle test is conducted at the Satpas.
The tests are the stage that determines whether an application for a new SIM (Surat Izin Mengemudi โ the Indonesian driving licence) succeeds. They consist of two parts that must be taken in sequence: the theory test first, then the practical test.
Theory Test
The theory test is administered on a computer-based system at the Satpas (the police driving licence issuing office). Its content covers:
- Traffic signs, road markings, and traffic signalling devices
- Regulations and procedures for traffic on the road
- The rights and obligations of drivers towards other road users
- Driving ethics and safety-conscious behaviour
- Basic technical knowledge of motor vehicles
Practical Test
The practical test assesses vehicle control across a sequence of manoeuvres on the test course, including directional control, balance, accuracy in stopping, and the ability to manoeuvre in a confined space. The sequence of manoeuvres differs between the motorcycle and the car test, and is adjusted to the SIM class being applied for.
If You Do Not Pass
Applicants who do not pass may retake the test after the interval set by the Satpas. There is no limit on the number of retakes that would cancel the application, as long as the registration is still valid. The technical rules on the interval and on rescheduling may differ between Satpas offices, including between Satpas offices in Central Kalimantan.
Warning
The tests cannot be substituted, taken by a proxy, or bypassed through payment. Every offer of โpassing without taking the testsโ is an illegal practice.
